#LEGEND OF HEROES TRAILS IN THE SKY SECRET OF THE OLD MAP SERIES#
What, exactly, did I think of Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel ?įor those of you uninitiated, Legend of Heroes is a JRPG series spanning some 20-30 odd years, starting all the way back in 1989 as a derivative of another series called the Dragon Slayer series. Without further ado, let me answer the question you likely have on your mind: I strongly believe that both of these are topics important enough to the Trails of Cold Steel series to deserve their own analyses, separate from my usual parameters. Now, I’m going to include a couple unusual things in this review: I’m going to include a section where I review the World and Continuity, and I’m going to include a section where I review the Romance. Because there are four games in this series, which all in all took me about 60-80 hours each, I spent about 240-320 hours of my life with this series.

It is with this interest in JRPGs, anime, and YA books that I approached Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, a game series that I had heard was a lot like a YA book series with JRPG combat and an anime art-style. I may not have been a Harry Potter kid (feeling like I dodged a bullet with that more and more everyday), but I definitely circled around it: Artemis Fowl, Septimus Heap, Percy Jackson, any number of fantastical books about special boys on magical journeys to reach the apex of their own respective fields and correct the (largely simplistic and PG-rated at worst) problems of the societies they live in. While my favorite general genre of literature is pretty firmly rooted in mystery novels, I grew up reading a lot of generalized fantasy Young Adult fiction. What you may NOT know (though, dear God, I hope you’ve already assumed or are at least willing to believe) is that I like reading traditional text-based books, many of which aren’t even originally written in Japan. If you’ve read my writing on this website before, you already know that I also love anime. And speaking of time, I’m used to time-commitment for this genre– whether it’s spending a scant 30 hours on the main story of a Pokemon game, or spending 120 hours beating Persona 5: Royal, I’m game to spend as much time as is necessary to take the championship, win the war, beat God, date the love interest of my choice, and/or turn demons into a renewable fuel source (shout out to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor ). Whether it’s Shin Megami Tensei, Final Fantasy, Persona, Disgaea, Fire Emblem, Tales of, Pokemon, or any number of stand-alones and spin-offs, I tend to have a pretty good time with them. JRPGs are one of my favorite genres of videogames. If you want to know my basic opinion, just skip to the bottom and look at the final score.) Then here are summaries for the Trails in the Sky and Zero/Ao games.(WARNING: This review contains spoilers for the Trails of Cold Steel, Trails in the Sky, and Trails to Azure series. There are also recaps for them within the actual game. NISA have summaries for Cold Steel 1-3 on their Cold Steel 4 website here. What about summaries for the previous games? Otherwise you should have at least played the previous Cold Steel games. The ideal scenario would be to play those games but the mix of platform availability and localization status makes that difficult. Cold Steel 4 does assume that the player has knowledge of previous arcs and doesn't do much explaining so it puts Western players in a weird spot. Cold Steel 4 is meant to be the finale of the Cold Steel saga (the subtitle in Japan was literally "The End of Saga") and wrap up lingering plot points from the previous two arcs, Trails in the Sky and the two Crossbell (Zero/Ao) games, the latter of which were never officially localized. If you go for the completitionist approach, (sidequests, collectibles, minigames and NPC talking) most reports are closer to 90-110 hours for everything.

If you mainline the game without engaging with side content, the game will be around 50-60 hours. Compared to the previous games, there have been a number of changes. Now, the students of Class VII, old and new, must unite with heroes from all over the continent to create the only chance the world has to be spared from total destruction.Ĭold Steel 4 continues with the style of turn based combat that the series is known for. Further, the hero of the Erebonian Civil War and Class VII's instructor, Rean Schwarzer, has gone missing.

The heroes of Class VII find themselves against the full force of the Empire on the path to domination. The Erebonian Empire is on the brink of all out war. Together, we shall write the end to this wretched fairy tale. Note: Cold Steel 1-3 story details are fair game to discuss openly.
